The Textile Museum And Gardens

We went to The Textile Museum for their “Blueblood: Princes And Princesses For A Day” family program. The museum is located in the historic Kalorama neighborhood of Washington, D.C., which also is a part of Embassy Row. It was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon in this very quaint, interesting, and educational museum.

At the museum, we first watch the film, ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ (Brian falls asleep and naps for the next hour). Kevin and Justin then made crowns, using different types of textiles as decoration. Justin works on his crown.

The museum has a new exhibit, ‘Blue,' which shows the color blue on textiles produced through different cultures and time periods. We learned how people worldwide grow and process indigo plants to make blue textiles. We also looked at the exhibit ‘The Finishing Touch: Accessories From The Bolivian Highlands,’ which features over 100 textile accessories made by the indigenous Bolivian Highland people.

In the Textile Learning Center, an activity gallery, we learn about different types of patterns - weaving, patchwork, embroidery, and printing. Justin learns the double running stitch. The Textile Museum gardens are located behind the museum The boys play around in the garden Daddy joins in with the boys in the gardens The boys play under the pergola When it was closing time for the museum, Brian was reluctant to leave, but eventually got up to go (after several minutes of coaxing). The boys strike a pose in front of the Embassy of Ireland, which is very near the Textile Museum.
